Arc Flashing

Life-Saving Electrical System Analysis

Consultation: We will meet with key individuals responsible for managing and overseeing the hospital’s compliance with ARC Flashing. We will perform an arc-flash study for the electrical distribution system at your facility based on the electrical single-line drawings provided.

Short-Circuit Study

Tabulate calculated short-circuit currents and corresponding distribution equipment short-circuit interrupting ratings, indicating the status (adequacy or inadequacy) of the ratings of the equipment based on the calculated short-circuit values. The study will include a representation of the electric power distribution system in the form of a one-line diagram and tabulation of input data, including conductor information, number of conductors per phase, impedance values, X/R ratios, motor contributions (>15HP), and other circuit information used to perform the short-circuit calculations.

Coordination Study

We will evaluate the system operation under fault conditions and determine protective device settings to provide maximum protection while maintaining optimum selectivity. Short-circuit study results will be used to establish minimum and maximum current levels at which coordination must be achieved. We'll provide time-current curves showing characteristics of fuses, circuit breaker trip devices, and relays, along with conductor and transformer inrushes for each coordination situation of interest.

Arc Flash Study

Utilize the results of the short‐circuit study, along with the chosen protective device settings, to determine clearing time, recommended Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) level, and boundary distances. The arc flash analysis will include Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) category requirements, potential arc-flash incident energy levels, arc ratings at a working distance of 18 inches for equipment, and the flash protection boundary distance.

The studies will be performed using computer-based software: Power Tools for Windows (PTW) by SKM System Analysis, Power Tools for Windows (PTW), and the Arc Flash Analysis Module.
