Fire Safety – What kind of improvements can be made to my building?

Fire safety is important when it comes to building safety. Whether you own a ten story office building or a small retail shop, you should always be ready for the worst case scenario – a fire. Since fire safety is extremely important, you may want to keep the following guidelines in mind:

Fire Equipment

Every building should have the adequate fire equipment that includes fire alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and the necessary equipment so that employees will have the right materials to potentially fight off a smaller fire. For every 200 to 250 square meters of space, it’s best to have at least one fire extinguisher. Always make sure that these extinguishers are readily available and the employees know exactly where they are located.

Fire Prevention

One of the best ways to prevent a fire is, well, by preventing it. Make sure that your building has the right prevention measures set in place. This can include setting rules for cooking in the cafeteria, storing flammable items safely and making sure that the people within the building know the rules of fire safety. It’s best to have a proper fire escape route map displayed around the building. The more people know about fire safety within the building, the quicker they can get out.

Training Drills

No matter how many employees are in the building, fire drills should be held at least once a year. These drills will make sure that the employees know exactly where to go in case a fire does happen. During these drills, you will want to design a meeting place, designate exit points and create a route that gets the employees out as fast as they can. Just remember, you will want to hold these drills as a surprise and never let them know when you’re going to hold them.
